The lab contains 3 HTC Vive Pros running off 1080Ti graphics cards. A further 6 Oculus Quests, 2 Oculus Rifts and 2 1080 supported laptops are available to help support projects. The lab also has an Insta360 Pro 2 8K camera and high quality 4K Panasonics for creating VR video.
The evaluation of VR by the i3HS team asked 20 questions with the main findings being:
- 81% of participants would more likely enrol on a course that includes virtual reality
- 89% thought it would enhance their learning experience
- 77% of lecturers would use virtual reality as part of their curriculum
The VR evaluation prompted Tony Payton and Martin Fergie to enter the Innovation Factory Next Big Thing Competition 2019 where they proposed to develop VR content for medical higher education. They were winners of that competition and have recently launched the UoM spin-out VREvo (https://vr-evo.co.uk). The company has started to develop its first content which includes 360 videos of surgical procedures and a VR simulation of eye disease and physiology.
